Objective

Thanks to the financial support of Nokia Belgium, the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) and the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) are able to award the annual Nokia Bell Scientific Award. Nokia is a global leader in connectivity, advancing fixed, mobile, and transport networks for the AI era. This Nokia Bell Scientific Award recognises the PhD thesis that makes the most original contribution in the field of information and communication technologies within one of the following topics:

  • Artificial and connected intelligence;
  • Artificial intelligence assisted software development;
  • Decentralized/Trustless and secure Software Systems;
  • Edge and cloud computing;
  • Fixed and wireless communication;
  • Optical communication;
  • Signal processing;
  • AI-native, autonomous and mission-critical networks.

Features

  • Prize amounts to € 8,000.
  • In recognition of an outstanding PhD thesis in information and communication technology relating to one or more of the topics listed above.

Profile and conditions

  • The prize is intended for an individual researcher who obtained their PhD thesis between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2025 at a Belgian university or at the Royal Military Academy of Belgium.
  • On the submission deadline, candidates must hold a research position at a university or research institute.
  • Candidates cannot be employed by Nokia Belgium or its subsidiaries.

Procedure

  • Submit your application using the official form, filled in correctly and completely (in English) no later than 16 March 2026 to prijzen@fwo.be.
  • Your application will be reviewed by a scientific jury of experts, who will select the award winner.
